Clinical Assays for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin: What Should We Measure and How?
نویسنده
چکیده
Within the last year, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) has been a topic of great discussion in both the scientific and popular press. Recent reports have demonstrated that because of hCG’s heterogeneity, assay standardization is an important problem, with different immunoassays giving different results for the same specimens. In addition there have been reports of falsenegative results due to high concentrations of certain hCG variants. Finally, the popular press has reported on illicit use of hCG by athletes for performance enhancement and by dieters for weight loss. In all, these publications raise questions about what variants of hCG are currently being measured, what should be measured, and how best to do it. In this Q&A article, 5 leaders in the field have been asked to comment on current clinical assays for hCG and what the future might hold.

متن کاملHuman chorionic gonadotropin isoforms and their epitopes: diagnostic utility in pregnancy and cancer.
BACKGROUND Clinical management of pregnancy, pregnancy-related disorders and trophoblastic tumors is dependent on immunoassay measurements of the complex analyte human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Differences in hCG results using different methods affect clinical interpretation with potentially adverse consequences for patient care. Objectives/method: To provide an overview of factors contribu...
متن کاملThe Higher Response of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor and Angiotensin-II to Human Chorionic Gonadotropin in Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Background This research investigated the response of vascular active factors, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and angiotensin-II (AT-II) to ovarian stimulation during 24 hours in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). MaterialsAndMethods In this clinical trial study, 52 patients with PCOS and 8 control cases were stimulated with human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) on the 4th ...
متن کاملO-32: Effects of Intrauterine Injection of Recombinant Human Chorionic Gonadotropin before Embryo Transfer on Outcome of In Vitro Fertilization/Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection: A Randomized Clinical Trial
Background: To evaluate the effectiveness of intrauterine injection of recombinant human chorionic gonadotropin (rhCG) before embryo transfer (ET). Materials and Methods: In this randomized placebocontrolled clinical trial, a total number of 182 infertile patients undergoing their first in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF-ICSI) were randomly assigned to receive 250 μg i...
متن کاملEstablishment, value assignment, and characterization of new WHO reference reagents for six molecular forms of human chorionic gonadotropin.
BACKGROUND The International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) established a Working Group to investigate means of improving the comparability of immunoassays for human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which was selected as a prototype glycoprotein analyte. The Working Group identified development of unambiguous nomenclature and production of new highly purified Inter...
